Here comes a drummer. Here comes another.
Hey, it's time for The Percussion of the Apes!
All the primates have a part: monkeys play bongos, chimpanzees playtympani, orangutans bang everythang, gorilla's got a gong!
But when will it be Baboon's turn?
And will he be ready when it comes?
Newcomer Dave Horowitz brings electrifying rhythmic energy to a cast of musically inclined primates and proves in his inimitable way that patience is a virtue.

Dave Horowitz (horowitzdave.com) grew up in Smithtown, New York. He studied coloring at a famous art college in Rhode Island, played drums in Oregon, worked in New York City, and was a professional rock climber. Now he lives in New York's Hudson Valley, where he's just trying to be a mensch. Five Little Gefiltes is one of several books he has written. Others include Beware of Tigers, The Ugly Pumpkin, and Soon, Baboon, Soon. From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 2–The primates have all come together to put on a drum show, "Percussion of the Apes." Baboon's triangle may not have the same presence as some of the other instruments ("Chimpanzees play timpani," while "Gorilla's got a gong"), yet youngsters learn that in a band, size and volume aren't as important as timing and cooperation. Reading this work aloud is the next best thing to hearing a live concert. The terse text carries a drumlike beat, and its size, color, and placement on the page help to convey that pounding rhythm. The artfully arranged illustrations–a vivid combination of cut paper, charcoal, and colored pencils–make this book a striking package, and readers will fall for Horowitz's adorable characters. Rich purple endpapers set off white chalky sketches of the primates banging on the variety of drums found inside the book–everything from congas and bongos to "pots and pans" and "things from under the sink." A surefire storyhour success.–Julie Roach, Watertown Free Public Library, MA
