"This is an urgent appeal. I am in great danger. The person whose companion I have been intends to have me done away with." None of the three people who received the letter took the words very seriously. The Chief Constable sent his copy of the letter to Inspector Purbright, as did the editor of the FLAXBOROUGH CITIZEN. Then a woman was found dead and when it was proved she was the writer of the letter, the whole affair took a more serious turn, revealing an ugly crack or two in the respectable facade of the town and citizens of Flaxborough.
