The quest for prestige and the exercise of national will were the pre-eminent concerns of many Britons from 1900-1970. Robert Holland provides a study of this period which reveals the shifting identity of Britain and her relationship with her colonies, her allies and rivals. By the end of the 20th century most Britons believed that their country's history during that century had been primarily a story of decline. It is Robert Holland's aim, in this study, to grapple with the complexities generated by such images of "rise and fall". Emerging from "splendid isolation" in world affairs at the beginning of the century, Britain began to play a more decisive role in Europe and developed her special relationship with the United States. Her imperial gaze also shifted away from India towards the Middle East. The interaction between these European, imperial and American impulses in British policy-making is reconstructed here.
