Between 1450 and 1750 Europe underwent tremendous political, religious and cultural change - change which laid the foundations for the Europe we know today. Henry Kamen has compiled an accessible biographical guide to Europe in this most exciting of periods - the time of the Renaissance and the Reformation, the time of da Vinci and Erasmus, Elizabeth I and Oliver Cromwell.
In over a thousand entries, which cover the whole of Europe and include politics, culture, religion and science, Professor Kamen and his international contributors, all experts in their field, shed new light on the key players in this extraordinarily rich and formative period of history.

About the Author:

Henry Kamen is Professor of History at the Higher Council for Scientific Research, Barcelona.

From Booklist:

This approximately 1,000-entry, alphabetically arranged work takes in the whole of Europe during the Renaissance and Reformation, covering politics, culture, religion, and science. Intended as a "quick reference source for scholars, students, and members of the wider reading public," the book's clean double-column format and accessible prose suit a broad audience. Though explanations of artistic and literary endeavors are outnumbered by those concerning history and politics, the approach is nonetheless effectively cross-disciplinary.

The six contributors and the editor, all university professors and subject experts, have made judicious decisions regarding inclusion and exclusion. In keeping with the strictly European focus, personages of the Ottoman Empire, for example, are excluded, as are those whose careers, like that of Cotton Mather, lie outside the European continent. However, persons whose exploits served to link Europe to the outside world, such as Hernan Cortes and Henry Hudson, are included. Names are given according to their most common usage in scholarly English works, though in some cases variants are listed directly after the entry name in parentheses. Cross-references, embedded in the entries, are indicated by the use of small capitals. The writing is uniformly objective, interesting, and lucid.

There is overlap with other biographical reference sources, but Who's Who in Europe, 1450^-1750 treats more individuals of the period than most other sources, and the range of its coverage provides useful context. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.

Reference on the Web: Historical Fiction Sites

There are numerous Web pages devoted to historical fiction. Like other genre fiction sites, some have gotten quite sophisticated while others still retain an "I'm doing this in my spare time" aura. Here are a few that demonstrate different ways to approach the topic. All were last accessed on February 18, 2000.
