Water aResources nd Development provides a comprehensive introduction to issues associated with the use and sustainability of water resources in developing countries. It gives readers an understanding of the role of water resources in the livelihoods of people, especially the poor, in different parts of the South; the links between water uses and environmental processes and sustainability; the social, economic and political context of water resources; and the range of different approaches to water resources planning and management.
Water resources have come to be recognised as perhaps the key natural resource in many parts of the developing world. They are vital to the livelihoods of the poor in both rural and urban areas and are an essential input to food security systems (agriculture, livestock, fishing and other common property resource uses) and health. These water resources can have multiple uses, leading to conflicts at both local and international levels, and some uses can lead to the degradation of both the quality and quantity of resources available for future development. The influence of climate variability, water as a hazard, water ecosystems (eg: wetlands and tourism v. conservation), urban and industrial water use, hydropower and dams are also discussed.
These issues are seen as some of the most important sustainable development challenges, forming a major focus of attention at the Rio+10 Earth Summit in 2002. This book gives an analysis of these issues and brings in the wider development perspectives related to the social and institutional context of their management, the role and influence of donor aid programmes, environmental management and change, and different approaches to resource management in practice. The conclusion considers future global water security in the 21st century.
