9780415397254: The World's Religions: Continuities and Transformations

This comprehensive volume focuses on the world's religions and the changes they have undergone as they become more global and diverse in form.  It explores the religions of the world not only in the regions with which they have been historically associated, but also looks at the new cultural and religious contexts in which they are developing. It considers the role of migration in the spread of religions by examining the issues raised for modern societies by the increasing interaction of different religions. The volume also addresses such central questions as the dynamics of religious innovation which is evidenced in the rise and impact of new religious and new spirituality movements in every continent.

From Booklist:

A reference work on the religions of the world likely conjures up an image of a collection of entries that includes survey articles on various traditions along with shorter discussion of specific sacred texts, deities, important historical figures, and the like, the purpose being to introduce the reader to a particular tradition or provide focused treatment for a discrete topic. The World’s Religions: Continuities and Transformations cannot be so characterized. The work is a collection of 54 lengthy, alphabetically arranged essays, many of which examine religious traditions, both old and new, in the contemporary world. For example, Jainism includes more discussion of the efforts in recent years on the part of Jain communities in Great Britain and North America to conceptualize traditional Jain beliefs through Western ideas of nonviolence, vegetarianism, and environmentalism than a detailed account of the history of Jainism and its scriptures, monastic practice, and sects. Confucian Heritage does a far better job of presenting historical Confucianism in addition to its relevance to and in the modern world. Entries on new religious movements (e.g., NRMs in Africa and the Middle East) abound. Some of the more intriguing entries are not tradition specific, discussing such topics as Globalization and Religion and Migration and Religion. The question this work poses is whether it’s a true reference work or a collection of scholarly essays, the alphabetical arrangement of its chapters notwithstanding. The aforementioned entries entitled Jainism and Confucian Heritage demonstrate unevenness in the treatment of the historical dimensions of those traditions. There is no chapter dedicated to Hinduism, and the only entry focused on gender and religion speaks to the status of women in the Muslim world. A work of selective coverage with specialized information for an advanced audience, this title is recommended for theological libraries and research collections. --Christopher McConnell
