From the Preface--
This book, borne out of the authors' experiences in research and practice, is intended to assist those for whom the planning of an organization's workspace is a key component of their job. It looks at the changing nature of work and the implications of the workplace - in short the demand and supply sides of the workspace equation. We trace the growing trends of organizations that are integrating their physical resource considerations (built assets) into their overall business planning processes. We describe methods that can be employed to gain an understanding of the needs of the business (current and future) and the capabilities of current workspace, and how to reconcile the supply and demand equation. We aim to show the correlation between work and the workplace, between workplace provision and the effectiveness of people, and the correlation between the way the workplace is provided and serviced, and business's effectiveness in meeting the needs of their customers. Finally, we also encourage "stepping back from the canvas" - that is to say putting the details of your organization's forecast workspace needs into the context of the changing world of work - and in so doing create an opportunity to add real value to the organization by moving from _responsive_ to _anticipatory_ workspace planning.
In each chapter we use Case Notes, drawn from businesses we have encountered through our research and consultancy work, to illustrate the topics covered which we hope will exemplify and amplify the text.
This book covers many topics relating to buildings, technology, environmental services and their management. But essentially this book is about people. That is the people who design, construct, service, maintain, lease, buy and sell workspace - but most importantly of all, it is about the people who use workspace. It is about their needs and aspirations, their likes and dislikes, and how to create workplace environments that best support them in their endeavors.
