9780415534963: The Chinese Way

As business becomes increasingly globalized and China establishes its growing role in the international business environment, developing an understanding of the complex culture is important to anyone acting in the global arena. This book offers readers a thorough and nuanced resource to that end, describing the ever-evolving Chinese way of life circa 2014, based on extensive primary and secondary data.

Taking an anthropological approach to achieve a well-rounded representation, the book covers 51 topics that would have been studied if China were a newly discovered civilization. It explores the culture through its examination of the nine core concepts that best represent the Chinese way of life. While the book is a rigorous treatment of the Chinese way of life, it is also filled with personal stories and perspectives from close to 1000 successful Chinese from academia, business, and government.

The Chinese Way equips international business students, scholars, and practitioners with a deep understanding of a society that is a major player in global business today and offers a foundation for successful business interactions with Chinese companies, organizations, and people.

From the Author:

Readers can refer to tcw2014.org for online materials accompanying this book.  We have asked a few professors in China to review the book, and some of their comments are copied below (in random order):

For people who like to know more about China, visit China or do business with China, The Chinese Way by Min Ding and Jie Xu is a must have reference.  With a collection of 51 topics and a nine-concept essential framework to understand China and Chinese, the book provides both fact based summary on cultural, social and business aspects of China and critical thinking on the trends occurring in China their future implications.

- Professor Yuxin Chen, New York University Shanghai Campus

I think foreigners will appreciate the book very much. In fact, I just recommended a Tuck professor (who has been teaching doing business in China at Tuck for a few years) to read this book. I will also recommend our exchange students to read this book and the students who take "doing business in China" at Guanghua (school of management).

- Professor Jing Xu, Deputy Chair, Marketing Department, Peking University

Chinese's way of life is very different from the westerns', this difference reflects the fundamental characteristics of Chinese culture. The authors of The Chinese Way have observed and analyzed many finer details of Chinese society. A reader who spends time to appreciate the details described in the book will benefit greatly in understanding China and Chinese.

- Professor Ping Zhao, Director, Center for Chinese Enterprise Research, Tsinghua University

This book is an overview of the "hundred facets" of Chinese society, it is an excellent service to introduce these to western readers. The book is very easy to read, and should be particularly useful to those who do not understand Chinese society.

- Professor Kaiyan Shen, Deputy Director, Center for Economic Research, Chinese Social Science Institute.

This is a book incorporating the emic and etic approaches in seeing China differently, beyond seeing a different China. I shared some WeChat posts on the nine concepts of CWOL and my Chinese followers liked them a lot. They (most of MBA students and business school professors) did not think that contents are intuitive or superficial. In contrast, these thoughts are inspirational to them. In a hindsight perspective, nothing highlighted in the book would surprise them. Still, they just have never thought about the underlying why's and how's of those everyday phenomena. This is what they highly respect for the book. They just came to think over what they had never thought about if they really knew before. According to the feedbacks from my WeChat followers, I would say the insights are rich (even for Chinese).

- Dr. Deqiang Zou, Fudan University

The Chinese Way provides a focused treatment of contemporary Chinese society and Chinese consumers on topics in politics, economics, culture, value system, lifestyle, consumer behavior, etc, and includes the most important and must know insights. If you want to have a deep understanding of contemporary China and Chinese consumers, this is a must-read book.

- Professor Yuhuang Zhen, Tsinghua University

I think this book will even be valuable to Chinese readers as well, as it has included many insightful first hand material. Many cases discussed in the book will allow readers to have a much better grasp of the bigger pictures. This book will not only allow foreigners to understand China better, it will also allow Chinese to have a more objective understanding of ourselves.

- Professor Yihong Yu, Fudan University

I am very impressed with the authors' detailed observations of the Chinese society, and rational abstraction from these data. The authors handled the topics with ease while attended to every details. Great Job.

- Professor Jian Zhou, Nankai University

I think this book has value for even Chinese, for several reasons, (1) it covers a huge range of topics that are integral to Chinese society. There are very few books like this even in China. (2) it provides unique perspectives on many topics. This means the authors not only truly understand what happens in China, they also are able to use the right language to communicate to the foreign readers. (3) it discusses new social phenomena that are part of the contemporary China, such as nightlife and leftover women; (4) it is very readable.

- Professor Guoqun Fu, Peking University

While Chinese economy plays an ever more critical role in the world stage, the face of Chinese has become fuzzier over years. Not only many foreigners feel it's hard to truly understand Chinese' behavior, the Chinese are undergoing ever changing self-examination as well. In this backdrop, if one can simultaneously record some of the critical cross-sections from a high attitude, she would have provided an extremely valuable historical documentation, and a mirror for Chinese to self-examine. This book by Min Ding and Jie Xu serves this purpose and allows us to see the dynamic and multidimensional Chinese profile. Many perspectives discussed in the book are very unique, and can help Chinese understand Chinese better. For example, the analysis in Chapter 7 (Pursuit of Quick Success and Instant Benefits) are right on.

- Professor Siqing Peng, Chair, Marketing Department, Peking University

Yutang Lin's classic1935 book, My Country and My People, introduced China and Chinese to foreigners and was hugely influential. Almost 80 years have passed since then, and China is no longer the same as before. I think the book by Professor Min Ding and Jie Xu, The Chinese Way, is of the perfect timing on the contemporary China.

I think the structure of the book is very good, the 51 chapters covers almost all important facets of China. The selected contents are representative, and the authors handled well both the topics that have evolved gradually over the Chinese history and the topics that are completely new.

The authors have an uncanny ability in capturing the thought process of Chinese and social norm and habits, on topics including face, tribalism, unwritten rules, promises, pursuit of quick success etc.

The authors completely understand there are two sets of languages in China. One will only say things that are politically correct in public setting, but he will tell you his true feeling in private setting after you gain his trust. So the first hand data the authors collected in private settings have substantial value to readers.

Overall, I think this is an excellent book.

- Professor Zheng Zheng, Director, Basin Pollution Control Research Center, Fudan University

I really enjoyed reading the book. The book provides nice analysis on many hot topics in China, through lively examples and easy to follow perspectives, as well as its contemporary nature. I like it very much. Some of the individual chapters identified in the book, as a matter of fact, are worthy of a graduate dissertation. For example, I especially like the description and analysis in Chapter 7, Pursuit of Quick Success and Instant Benefits, very insightful. I think this book has also raised many questions that are worthy of serious discussions among the Chinese.

- Professor Xudong Zhao, Director, Institute of Anthropology, Renmin University
