9780415828222: The Early Childhood Curriculum: Inquiry Learning Through Integration

Based on research that demonstrates the powerful advantages of integrating the curriculum while providing inquiry opportunities, The Early Childhood Curriculum shows how to make such an approach work for all children, preschool through the primary grades. The text demonstrates how to confidently teach using inquiry-based methods that address the whole child, while also meeting and exceeding academic standards. Offering a foundation in early childhood theory, philosophy, research, and development, the 2nd edition of this unique textbook helps future teachers, as well as current educators, understand the "why" of curriculum in early childhood and invests them with the skills they need to move from simply following a script to knowledgeably creating curricula on their own.

Since each curricular subject has its own integrity, there is a chapter for each discipline, grounding the reader in the essentials of the subject in order to foster knowledgeable and effective integration. The 2nd edition of The Early Childhood Curriculum includes information on the most recent trends in national curriculum standards, particularly in regard to the Common Core State Standards Initiative and the Next Generation Science Standards. Coupled with this information are practical suggestions for meeting standards while still providing young learners with a truly child-centered educational experience. Chapters contain real-life vignettes that demonstrate inquiry and integration in practice. The entire text reflects the philosophy that the use of inquiry to seek and obtain information is one of the most valuable and powerful tools children can acquire along the way to becoming lifelong learners.

About the Author:

Suzanne L. Krogh is Professor Emerita of Elementary and Early Childhood Education at Western Washington University.

Pamela Morehouse is a retired Washington state elementary school teacher. She is an active trainer of teachers, recently returning from Pakistan where she volunteered to train teachers and administrators for The Citizens Foundation, a non-profit NGO. The text she used for the class was the first edition of the proposed book. She is currently developing a teacher-training program for Guatemala, centering on early literacy.

Review:

"The authors have a long and successful history of guiding teachers’ understanding and implementation of best practices by drawing from the most up-to-date research and influential institutions in the early childhood field. The well-developed and easy-to-read content in the chapters provides practical examples of how teachers build inquiry-based learning experiences by weaving three main dynamics: the inquisitive learners, an engaging and meaningful curriculum, and providing a child-centered environment. Short scenarios of real classroom situations throughout each chapter bring to life the natural ways children learn through inquiry; enriched through collaboration with peers and from guidance by adults specifically prepared in early childhood education. Early childhood teachers will want to keep this book as a reference for years to come."

--Lynn C. Hartle, Ph.D., Professor of Education, The Pennsylvania State University, Brandywine

"In this important book, Krogh and Morehouse have succeeded in offering powerful and practical guidance for teachers as they navigate immediate professional demands. The world view which supports their recommendations upholds democratic values while taking account of the complexities of twenty-first-century living. The book offers optimism and hope for teachers at a critical time when they are challenged to develop young minds not only for the future but for rich and fulfilling lives in school today."

--Sylvia Chard, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Early Childhood Education, University of Alberta, Canada
