Ling Po, the most boastful man in all of China, claims that he can build a kite that will take him to the moon.

Kindergarten-Grade 6-- Although the Cataloging in Publication Data classes this as a folktale, the publisher supplies no source, nor did a reference check yield one. Still, there is certainly a folksy quality to this tale of Ling Po, a village braggart, who boasts he can do anything better than anyone else. Fanned by the skillful manipulations of the vengeful village crone, rumor reaches the Emperor of China himself that Ling Po plans to fly a dragon kite to the moon. Outwitted by the old lady's machinations, Ling Po must now carry out his boast before the Emperor and assembled court. He lands and claims the moon in the name of the Emperor in true braggadocio fashion--only to discover that he has landed on the far side of his own field and is consequently a laughingstock. Miller spins her tale with a nice sense of language and verbal timing. The two protagonists are delineated well, and the text is both concrete and evocative enough to stand on its own as a fine oral story. Underscoring this are Deuchar's superb watercolors in beautiful, bold colors, conjuring up a pseudo-Manchu-Chinese fairyland to delight the eye even as Miller's text delights the ear. Nor is humor lacking here, but it is most conspicuous in the confrontations between the crone and Ling Po and the scenes of rumor-spreading. Altogether, this is a superior collaboration, offering a delightful romp with a moral.
