Book Description Methuen & Co Ltd, London, 1979. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Photographs, Illustrations (illustrator). First Edition. Dust jacket large tears repaired, creased. Green cloth with bright gilt titling on spine and upper cover. No ownership inscription. Colour frontis platexxi,245 pages clean and tight. The Institute of Bankers, which was established in London with 2,000 members in 1879 and now has a membership of over 110,000 men and women in England, Wales, and over 100 other countries, has a special place in the history of banking. This book examines the first hundred years of the Institute's development in the context of banking business as a whole, with a particular emphasis upon changes in the staffing requirements of the banks and the importance of professional qualifications in the careers of their employees. The survey includes a description of early attempts to form a professional institute for bankers between the 1840s and the 1870s, and the origins and development of the Institute's responsibilities for professional qualifications in the late nineteenth century. Because the Institute was launched on the understanding that its membership and qualifications would be accessible to many thousands of bank employees, the subsequent growth of the Institute's activities was a major factor in the extension of professional education throughout the banking community. With its deliberately broad base of membership, the development of the Institute in the twentieth century was closely adjusted to changes in bank employment and banking business as a whole. By the 1970s members both at home and abroad could identify the Institute and its modern range of activities as the main channel for the study and discussion of important issues of banking. This history, by examining the objectives, growth of membership, and the extension of the Institute's activities, throws light upon the changing work and qualifications of bank personnel and offers a case study in the development of a large and important professional group.
