"Spon's Landscape and External Works Price Book" covers all the items needed for a medium-sized hard and soft landscape contract together with other external works items which are normally executed incidently to a building contract by a building contractor, and should assist the landscape designer, quantity surveyor or contractor in the tasks of specification, measurement, cost estimating and cost control. This year the book includes a new Section 3.2 "How to Use this Book", which gives a detailed explanation of preparing estimates from the "Prices for Measured Works", including a worked example. New users may not be familiar with the way in which measured work prices are constructed and this section will enable them to make better use of the rates and market prices given in each section. There is also a section on regional variations which is designed to help readers with contracts in areas where they are unfamiliar with local prices. Readers are reminded that the measured works prices are applicable to main contracts only and allowance must be made for work carried out as a sub-contract to a main building of civil engineering contract. Section 2.3 on preliminaries/general conditions and chapter 3 on cost information should be studied before allowances for sub-contract work are calculated. This edition is produced in compliance with the Common Arrangement and SMM7, which are now recommended for use in information classification and bills of quantities in the construction industry. The Common Arrangement is constantly under review, and variations in the classes of technical literature may occur. There is now a correlation with items contained in "Spon's Architects' and Builders'" and "Spon's Civil Engineering Price Books", which will enable users to construct multi-disciplined estimates more accurately. Revisions to prices given in this book are supplied in "Spon's Price Book Updates" which are circulated free every three months to those readers who have registered with the publishers. An extract of the relevant Common Arrangement Work Section is included at the beginning of the book in order to help users become familiar with the system, and they may find it useful to copy these pages to keep at hand for easy reference. British Standards have been updated to January 1992 and cross-referenced to enable the reader to identify a BS either by number or subject. New and amended BSs are published in the monthly "BSI News". Where there exists a wide range of proprietary items such as seeds, fertilizers or bricks, a selection of these is given in each market prices section in order to provide the reader with a choice of PC prices. Chapter 1 - recent legislation - is updated to January 1992, but the reader should always check that any act, regulation or circular is still in force at the date of the contract. Some of the earlier and less important legislation has been removed to make way for more recent items, but they can be found in earlier editions of the "Price Book".
