9780425255636: Death Come Quickly (China Bayles)

“One of the most endearing and personable amateur sleuths” (Midwest Book Review), herbalist and ex-lawyer China Bayles is back. In Death Come Quickly, a friend’s murder may be the key to solving a fifteen-year-old cold case...

When China’s and Ruby’s friend Karen Prior is mugged in a mall parking lot and dies a few days later, China begins to suspect that her friend’s death was not a random assault. Karen was a filmmaker supervising a student documentary about the fifteen-year-old murder of a woman named Christine Morris and the acquittal of the man accused of the crime. Is it possible that the same person who killed Christine Morris targeted Karen?

Delving into the cold case, China learns the motive for the first murder may be related to a valuable collection of Mexican art. Enlisting the help of her San Antonio lawyer friend Justine Wyzinski—aka the Whiz—China is determined to track down the murderer. But is she painting herself into a corner from which there’s no escape?

About the Author:

Susan Wittig Albert grew up on a farm in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley. A former professor of English and a university administrator and vice president, she is the author of the China Bayles Mysteries, the Darling Dahlias Mysteries, and the Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter. Some of her recent titles include Widow’s Tears, Cat’s Claw, The Darling Dahlias and the Confederate Rose, and The Tale of Castle Cottage. She and her husband, Bill, coauthor a series of Victorian-Edwardian mysteries under the name Robin Paige, which includes such titles as Death at Glamis Castle and Death at Whitechapel.

From Booklist:

China Bayles returns to remind readers of the skills that enable Albert (aka Robin Paige) to keep four series going with a dynamic cast of characters and an interesting blend of cold cases and modern murder to solve. China’s friend Karen is beaten to death in a mall parking lot but not robbed. She had been advising two graduate students working on a film about the 15-year-old murder case of an art collector. Former lawyer turned herbalist China carefully researches the old case, even as one of the graduate students is attacked. Pecan Springs, Texas, police chief Sheila is waylaid with health problems, while China learns more about the cold-case victim’s Mexican art obsession and who might want her case to stay unsolved. The herbal and art details provide interesting background, while the plot moves and surprises. The minor characters, such as China’s friend Ruby and Sheila, provide as much insight as the heroine in this series. Readers may also enjoy Kate Collins’ series about another plant lover who left a law career behind. --Amy Alessio

Also the creator of the Darling Dahlias and Beatrix Potter series, and (as Robin Page) the co-creator of the Victorian-Edwardian mysteries, Susan Wittig Albert shows no sign of slowing down in this 24th China Bayles mystery (following Widow's Tears). When China and Ruby's friend Karen Prior is mugged in a mall parking lot and dies a few days later, China begins to suspect that Karen's death was not a random assault, as Karen had been supervising a student documentary about the murder of Christine Morris 15 years earlier. Delving into the cold case, China learns that the first murder may be related to a collection of Mexican art, and calls on San Antonio lawyer Justine Wyzinski—a.k.a. the Whiz—to help track down the killer.
