Ages 2-4. This expansive picture book takes Taylor's familiar poem (well, at least the first verse is familiar) "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" in a new direction. When a young boy and his little sister venture outdoors at night to follow the star that shines through their window, they find themselves in a biblical landscape. They begin their trek, complete with umbrella and backpack, meeting up with more traditionally clad shepherds and wise men. Together, all make their way to the Christ child. The charming marriage of cultures is reminiscent of art throughout the centuries that has clothed the stories from the Gospels in contemporary garb. It is also completely true to the way children conduct their own imaginative play, untroubled by anachronisms. The large-scale ink-and-watercolor illustrations (studded with iridescent foil stars) function almost like the art in a wordless picture book. They are accompanied by the secular words of the song, but they remain detached from the text. Still, the pictures alone create an unusually appealing Christmas picture book for young children. reS-Gr 2-Harker's soft-focus paintings, done in pen and ink and watercolor, present a new interpretation of Taylor's 1806 classic poem. Using the entire original text, illustrations depict two modern young children and their dog following a twinkling foil star into the past, where they journey with shepherds, still following the star, to view the newborn Jesus. The art, reminiscent of the work of both Helen Oxenbury and Sam Williams, provides the unique context linking the poem to the Christmas star. Most libraries will want a copy or two.-L. F.
