When he was born, Michelangelo Buonarroti was put into the care of a stonecutter's family. He often said it was from them that he got his love of sculpture. It certainly didn't come from his own father, a respectable magistrate who beat his son when he asked to become an artists apprentice.

Diane Stanley is the celebrated author and illustrator of a prize-winning series of picture-book biographies. Often working in collaboration with her husband, Peter Vennema, Ms. Stanley has brought to life such historical figures as Peter the Great, Joan of Arc, Leonardo da Vinci, William Shakespeare, Shaka, and Cleopatra. On a lighter side, she has also written such humorous books as Rumpelstiltskin's Daughter and Saving Sweetness. Ms. Stanley lives in Houston, TX.
