About the Author

CAROL FUHLER is associate professor in Curriculum and Instruction at Iowa State University. With Pamela Farris and Maria Walther, she co-authored Teaching Reading: A Balanced Approach for Today's Classrooms (McGraw-Hill, 2004). She is a frequent presenter at state and national conferences. MARIA WALTHER, who has a doctorate in elementary education from Northern Illinois University, has taught fi rst grade since 1986. She currently teaches at Gwendolyn Brooks Elementary in Aurora, IL. She shares her ideas with teachers around the country at seminars through Staff Development Resources and as an independent consultant.
