About the Author

Katharine Davies Samway is Professor of Education at San José State University, where she teaches courses in reading/language arts, assessment, writing, and multicultural literature for children and young adults. Her research focuses on the literacy development of English language learners (particularly their writing development and processes), and influences on teachers' beliefs and practices. She's the author of Myths and Realities, second edition (2007), Buddy Reading (1995), and the co-author of Literature Study Circles in a Multicultural Classroom (1996).

Dorothy Taylor is Associate Professor at the Educational Opportunity Center, SUNY at Buffalo, where she teaches English as a Second Language to adult immigrants and refugees. She has taught English language learners from Kindergarten to 80 years plus. She has published and presented on reading and writing processes, technology-assisted instruction, and ESOL standards.
