Family Medicine
Surfer heal thyself.  Whether Junior just slipped a sliver under his fingernail, Grandpa's wheezing noises are getting out of control, or that non-specific pain just won't go away, it's not always possible to find time for a trip to the doctor's for a consultation. Sometimes the answers to minor medical questions are straightforward and conveniently located online. The University of lowa Family Practice Handbook is text-heavy, and may lack that personal touch, but as a near-comprehensive directory of minor ailments, it's invaluable. On the commercial services, CompuServe's HealthNet is yet another excellent resource complete with a reference library and a sports injury section. Still, when the problem is beyond the power of the Internet, a sick surfer can locate a doctor via the MedSearch Physician Finder Online and find out whether that health plan will pay the fees at the National Committee for Quality Assurance.
CDC Wonder
The Centers for Disease Control present a complete collection of their guidelines and recommendations for the prevention of diseases, injuries and disabilities. The site includes the CDC's Yellow Book, with health information for international travelers. Get a list of topics (400 articles in all), consult the massive CDC database, or even search a national database of public health data with statistics on mortality, cancer, sexually transmitted diseases, and other topics.

Duke University/Community and Family Medicine
The team of specialists at the Research Triangle is dedicated to developing better and more productive patient/doctor relationships. In partnership with the World Health Organization, the university is currently working on a paper entitled "Making Medical Practice and Education More Relevant to People's Needs: The Contribution of the Family Doctor." The project challenges medical schools, professionals, and family doctors to work together for "relevance, quality, cost-effectiveness and equity in health care delivery." There are also links to various medical departments on the Duke campus, such as the Division of Medical Informatics, the Division of Occupational & Environmental Medicine, and the world-famous Duke Fitness & Diet Center.

Family Health
This site offers a series of two-and-a-half minute audio files providing practical answers to frequently asked questions about health. Be prepared: each file is about 1.2 megabytes in size. Topics run the gamut from hand washing, removing splinters, and staying cool in summer, to sleep apnea, peptic ulcers and radial keratotomy. Variety is the spice of life, after all.

Men's Health
Separating the men from the boys is as easy as examining their health problems. Men suffer from hair loss, impotence, prostate problems and testicular cancer. Boys get colds and skinned knees. Someone once said that when a man reaches the age of 30, hardly a day goes by when some part of his anatomy isn't aching, swelling, throbbing, or otherwise causing him pain. (Then again, the same goes for a teenage boy in love.) Fortunately, the Internet has plenty of resources to assist the troubled male. From alt.baldspot to Prostate Cancer (as explained by a 12-year-old), men will discover that they need not suffer alone nor in ignorance.

Starting Points

A Man's Life
A lively online magazine with obvious print antecedents that offers "complete instructions for health and wealth." Men's health and fitness advice is treated with the same respect as the interactive columns on clothes, family, money, work, sports, and hardware machinery.

Doctor's Hospital Health Source
"The baldness pattern seen in many men is hereditary and inevitable." "Almost every man, at some point in his life, has one or more bouts of impotence." "Testicular cancer is the most common form of cancer in men between the ages of 15 to 35." "As men age, it is common for the prostate to enlarge." This rather cheery outlook is provided by the Web site of an Ohio-based physician network, alongside more reassuring discussion of men's health issues.

The Health Report for Men
The quandary, "How do I examine my own testicles?" may seem otiose, but it, along with such queries as ~How do I find a good urologist?", provides the meat of this Q & A site. Effectively an opportunity to advertise a "carefully researched" report on male sexual health topics, including impotence, prostate problems, testicular cancer, penile injuries, circumcision, infertility, and penis enlargement.

Hair Loss

The Bosley Medical Institute
Legend has it that Julius Caesar wore a laurel wreath to cover up his baldness. Fortunately, modern science has come up with more advanced hair recovery techniques. Take a look at the best new wigs from the inside out, read up on Minoxidil, and witness a flap rotation. Visitors can classify their baldness patterns using diagrams at this site, then receive guidance on how to choose a hair restoration doctor, and view unretouched before-and-after photos of actual patients.

Hair Loss
Excess hair in the shower drain got you scared? Look before you freak and stop by the National Skin Centre's page for a diagnosis. The pictorial will aid in determining whether your hair loss is normal or a treatable medical condition you should see your physician about.

Impotence

Impotence Information Page
It's not "all in your head." Impotence, more politely known as "erectile dysfunction," is more common than reruns of Shaft, and the cause is usually physical. This London-based Web site provides basic information on the physical and psychological causes of impotence, which range from diabetes to stress, and explains treatments, including drug injection and vacuum therapy.

Impotence: It's Reversible
First the bad news: More than 30 million men in America suffer from impotence. Given that the majority of men prefer "making love" to any other home activity, this is a problem that needs to be addressed. And the good news? Impotence is reversible. Find out what to do about erection problems, retrograde ejaculation, and a host of other male sexual dysfunctions.

Successfully Treating Impotence
"How many cigarettes does it take to have an effect on a man's ability to sustain an erection?" Take the impotence quiz at this Web site and find the answer. This Colorful online guide also provides basic information on successfully treating impotence, plus links to physician referral services and a section for health professionals only.

Prostate Problems

My Prostate Cancer Homepage
An overview of My Prostate and Me: Dealing with Prostate Cancer, William Martin's personal account of his battle with the disease. The author's inspirational home page is a chapter-by-chapter history of his experiences, from learning "The News" to breaking it to his family ("Darkness") to going through "Surgery" and ~Recovery." Links lead to other prostate Web sites.

Prostate Cancer (as explained by a 12-year-old)
"Prostate cancer is a tumor that begins in the outer part of the prostate. As the tumor grows it may spread to other parts of the body. The prostate is a gland in the male body located below the bladder." Sixth-grader Christine M. Thompson explains the condition, along with a crayon drawing of cancerous male anatomy.

Urological Surgery

1-800-SURGEON
"These are the penis surgery pages." Statistics on penis sizes, lengthening and thickening procedures, and enlarging all parts of the male sexual organs. The site's also got an FAQ on penile surgery, as well as a worldwide surgeon referral directory and a teaching forum for surgeons who want to learn the techniques of penile surgery.

Penile Lengthening and Enlargement Surgery Center
If you refuse to believe that size doesn't matter, this Web site of the Surgery Center for Men in Beverly Hills has gone to great lengths to give you the information you need. Get the FAQ on penile enlargement. See before-and-after photos. Find out about the surgery techniques and what to expect as a result. Then make an appointment to have your "head" examined.
