A shy sixth grader learns to assert herself when she is encouraged to run for interim principal of her school

Grade 5-7-- Bonnie Mann is tired of being a goody-goody, unsure of how to lose the tag, and depressed at the prospect of spending sixth grade in the hands of the inept Mr. Locke. Since the parents all seem to feel that things are fine in this "good, little school," it seems unlikely that anything will change. The arrival of unconventional Gail Dewksbury and the sudden death of the school's elderly principal propel Bonnie into a campaign to be elected interim principal, with the firing of Mr. Locke as a prime goal. Once readers swallow the basic implausibility of a school board that provides in its by-laws for the "school community" to elect an interim principal, the plot moves along logically. Bonnie emerges as a thoughtful and likable heroine who is pleasantly surprised to find that she can tap an unexpected strength of will when she really needs it. Unfortunately the other characters are less well developed, including quirky custodian-cum-mentor Mr. Lipchik. Despite the shortcomings in premise and characterization, this is a reasonably entertaining book that makes a good point about caring and getting involved to improve a situation. It should appeal Barthe DeClements' fans. --Elaine Fort Weischedel, Turner Free Library, Randolph, MA
