The Pinis' second novelization of their lengthy comics narrative Elfquest, covering the same territory as the second collection of the original pictorial version, stands well enough on its own. It begins with Cutter, chief of the Wolfriders, deciding to search for surviving elves. At first, he leaves behind his beloved life mate, Leetah, and their two cubs and travels with only his brother-in-all-but-blood, Skywise. The machinations of evil magic, however, demand that Leetah and the Wolfriders seek their chief. By the time she and he are reunited, Cutter has learned much more about other elves, trolls, and humans, and most of the Wolfriders have been carried off to a mysterious place of evil called Blue Mountain. Prosification (so to speak) adds a good deal, some of it powerfully or wittily phrased, to the original story and, overall, new dimensions to an authentic masterpiece of modern American fantasy.
