Paperback. Condition: VG. Very nice and clean. Text free of highlighting and writing. Tightly bound. - Ikat, a method of tie-dyeing yams that produces a pattern with characteristically blurred edges, has an ancient, worldwide history yet has only begun to be explored in contemporary fiber design. It is a flexible technique that can produce both the intricate detail typical of traditional fabrics and the bold abstraction favored by modem fiber artists. It can require painstaking precision?or the utter simplicity of chance. IKAT TECHNIQUE is the first and only guide to this use of dyeing as a design component. Although it is often associated with woven fabrics, it can be used by all fiber artists who have mastered the fundamentals of their craft. Among the topics covered are the following: * a brief history--Indonesia, Japan, India, Turkistan, Africa, Europe, Central and South America * design and color--sources, development, mixing * dyeing techniques--dye types, equipment, materials, procedures, discharge dyeing, repainting * warp, weft, and double ikats?equipment, methods, isolating design areas * contemporary ikat--new artists, experimental techniques Two appendices cover a watercolor technique for designing ikats and a note on the Color Index, the standard reference of the dyestuff industry. A bibliography, list of suppliers, and index are also provided. Complete coverage of all ikat techniques from the simplest to the most complex plus over 100 drawings, black-and-white photos, and color plates make IKAT TECHNIQUE the perfect introduction and sourcebook for all craftspeople, art students, and fiber artists.
