James Underwood is the Professor of Pathology at the University of Sheffield, UK, and a Consultant Histopathologist. For over 30 years, James has enjoyedthe challenge of teaching pathology to students of medicine, dentistry and related subjects, while diagnosing disease in the living and the dead and researching into its causes.
James graduated in medicine and started his career in pathology in London before going to Sheffield. During his early career he held a research fellowship from the Medical Research Council and in the early 1980s he had a sabbatical in Australia. His main interests arein breast cancer and chronic inflammatory liver disease. James is currently Vice-President of the Royal College of Pathologists, President of the BritishDivision of the International Academy of Pathology, and Editor of "Histopathology", a monthly journal. He was, of course, delighted to be declared a Winner at the Royal Society of Medicine's Book Awards 2000 for the third edition of "General and Systematic Pathology".
His main interest outside work is leisure! But he also enjoys strenuous walks with his family in wet, wild and windy places, and he has a passionate interest in music.
"This edition is even better than the previous ones. The introduction of an associated website will make it even more useful for students. This book would be a worthy prize winner. The quality of writing and all other aspects are, in my opinion, outstanding and a great achievement for the authors."
BMA Awards 2005
"'Underwood Pathology' is one of the great brand names of medical undergraduate textbooks. The brilliance of the book is in making concepts clear enough to grasp, without skimping on the detail. The format and layout of this latest edition are virtually identical to the excellent 3rd edition, the most notable difference being the great thickness of the newer text. Underwood has always been the best book on the market, in my opinion, and this updated version further improves this 'classic'. Go buy."
