9780444563521: Renewable Hydrogen Technologies: Production, Purification, Storage, Applications and Safety

The fields covered by the hydrogen energy topic have grown rapidly, and now it has become clearly multidisciplinary. In addition to production, hydrogen purification and especially storage are key challenges that could limit the use of hydrogen fuel. In this book, the purification of hydrogen with membrane technology and its storage in "solid" form using new hydrides and carbon materials are addressed. Other novelties of this volume include the power conditioning of water electrolyzers, the integration in the electric grid of renewable hydrogen systems and the future role of microreactors and micro-process engineering in hydrogen technology as well as the potential of computational fluid dynamics to hydrogen equipment design and the assessment of safety issues. Finally, and being aware that transportation will likely constitute the first commercial application of hydrogen fuel, two chapters are devoted to the recent advances in hydrogen fuel cells and hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines for transport vehicles.

  • Hydrogen from water and biomass considered
  • Holistic approach to the topic of renewable hydrogen production
  • Power conditioning of water electrolyzers and integration of renewable hydrogen energy systems considered
  • Subjects not included in previous books on hydrogen energy
  • Micro process technology considered
  • Subject not included in previous books on hydrogen energy
  • Applications of CFD considered
  • Subject not included in previous books on hydrogen energy
  • Fundamental aspects will not be discussed in detail consciously as they are suitably addressed in previous books
  • Emphasis on technological advancements
  • Chapters written by recognized experts
  • Up-to date approach to the subjects and relevant bibliographic references

Gandía is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Public University of Navarre (UPNA), Spain, head of the research group “Chemical Reactors , member of the “Hydrogen Group at UPNA, and an experienced researcher on heterogeneous catalysis and catalytic reactors. Currently he is working on micro reaction technology for hydrogen production, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), renewable hydrogen production from wind energy and water electrolysis and hydrogen use as fuel for internal combustion engines. The author has recently published more than 15 papers on this topic

Gurutze Arzamendi is Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Public University of Navarre, Spain, member of the “Chemical Reactors group and an experienced researcher on chemical reactors, microreactors modelling and simulation and polymeric materials. Currently she is working on micro reaction technology for hydrogen production, CFD and kinetic modelling of catalytic reactions. The author has more than 51 papers published on this topic in highly cited international journals.

Pedro M. Diéguez is Associate Professor of Mechanical and Energetic Engineering at the Public University of Navarre, Spain and projects Manager of the “Hydrogen Group at UPNA. Currently he is working on several aspects of hydrogen energy with emphasis in hydrogen use as fuel for internal combustion engines, and CFD applied to investigate safety issues of hydrogen including leakages and transport, combustion, explosion and deflagration phenomena. He has 14 publications under his name on this topic

Review:

"...provides very good insights into the recent research activities in the areas of renewable hydrogen production...delivers a brief review of hydrogen purification and storage technologies as well as hydrogen usage in fuel cells and internal combustion engines." --Energy Technology, November 2014

"Editors Gandía, Arzamendi, and Díeguez ...offer this collection on the chemistry, physics, and technology of hydrogen fuel. Aimed at researchers, industry professionals, and students of environmental science, the book focuses on renewable feedstocks including photocatalysis and biomass, as well as purification and storage challenges that must be met before hydrogen can be used for a large portion of our energy needs." --Reference and Research Book News, December 2013
