9780444889669: Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths, Volume 15

Volume 15 in this series continues the voyage of discovery started almost a decade ago.

Chapter 98 adds significantly to an evaluation of systematic, experimental low-temperature studies of the ambivalent behaviours of cerium (ferromagnetism, antiferromagnetism, spin glass, superconductivity etc.) which depend upon its environment in materials. The conclusions arrived at should provide new data against which the theory can be advanced.

The next chapter provides a review of rare earth carbides, emphasizing the thermodynamics, phase diagrams, crystal structures and physical properties. The binary rare earth carbides present an exceptionally wide range of compositions and structures both as solids and gas-phase molecules. Complex carbides with additional metal and non-metal components also receive attention.

Metal-rich halides (i.e. compounds with an X/R ratio <2) are the subject of the next chapter. The compounds are classified according to their structure and chemical bonding characteristics and their electrical and magnetic properties are also reviewed.

Chapter 101 deals with the preparation, structure, chemical and physical properties of heavy-metal fluoride glasses. Large amounts of rare earths can be added into these, and they possess a great potential for optical applications in the mid-infrared range as fiber optic glasses for communication and transmission of information, optical wave guides, fiber lasers and sensors.

The following chapter explores the chemical kinetics of solvent and ligand exchange in aqueous lanthanide solutions. A wealth of tabulated information on rate and equilibrium constants is provided in textual and tabular form. Chapter 103 considers the fundamentally important reactions of the lanthanide ions with water. These interactions are discussed for both solids and solutions. The hydrated species are considered in detail for the aqueous solution, revealing the consequences of the lanthanide series sequence.

The concluding chapter reviews macrocyclic complexes formed by rare earth and dioxouranium ions as templates. Synthetic trends and reactivity are considered as well as potential uses of these intriguing wrap-around structures.

From the Back Cover:

In keeping with the tradition of the Handbook, volume 35 covers a wide diversity of topics involving the rare earth elements. The topics range from solid oxides for advanced, energy efficient electrical power generation (Chapter 223); to the oxo-selenate members of the vast family of complex oxo-anions; to organic beta-diketonate complexes (Chapter 225); to the utilization of organic complexes for molecular recognition and sensing (Chapter 226).

Natsuko Sakai, Katsuhiko Yamaji, Teruhisa Horita, Yue Ping Xiong and Harumi Yokokawa examine the role of yttria stabilized zirconia, R2O3-ceria, rare earth-alkaline earth manganites, and rare earth cobaltites, chromates and titanates as solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) components, i.e. the electrolyte, anode, cathode and interconnects.

Mathias Wickleder's review focuses on one particular family of oxo-compounds, which has been studied extensively in the past few years because of their rich structural chemistry, complex thermal behaviors and dual oxidation states {selenites [or oxo-selenate (IV)] and selenates [or oxo-selenate (VI)]}.

Koen Binnemans points out that the rare earth b-diketonates, which have been known for about 100 years, are one of the most extensively investigated rare earth coordination compounds. This popularity is due to the fact that they are easily synthesized, readily available from commercial sources, and have many applications.

Satoshi Shinoda, Hiroyuki Miyake, and Hiroshi Tsukube have summarized the recent advances in the chemistry of rare earth complexes in molecular recognition and sensing technology. When a lanthanide containing receptor binds with a given substrate, specific interactions may occur in the inner and/or outer coordination sphere(s), and by monitoring these resultant interactions precise information can be obtained about compounds (i.e. amino acids, proteins) and living organs.

About the Author:

Gschneidner has published over 485 journal articles and chapters in books and edited or written 40 books on the chemistry, materials science, and physics or rare earth materials. He was the founder of the Rare-earth Information Center and served as its Director for 30 years.
