Tryptophan, "a common ingredient of plant and animal proteins," has achieved new status in the light of Pollack's (and others') research. Long used as a herbal remedy, dietary tryptophan apparently helps control chronic pain. It is also thought to aid in controlling weight, insomnia, and depression. This book's first six chapters contain basic nutritional information and tell why the proper balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fat reduces pain. A large portion of the book is devoted to sample menus of a tryptophan-rich diet at different calorie levels, with food exchange lists and exercise instructions. Though not particularly well written or organized, the book presents an important concept. Recommended for public and patient libraries. Nancy B. Burrell, M.L.S., IBID Inc., Sarasota, Fla.
