A valuable opening section gives directions on when to call the paramedics, go to the emergency room, call the doctor immediately, or just make an appointment. Although the information is sound and the coverage very complete, the awkward arrangement of illnesses into large chapters with titles such as "Recognizing and Managing Serious or Potentially Serious Illness" is rather confusing. The table of contents is very detailed, but the lack of an index contributes to the difficulty of finding information quickly, particularly in an emergency.
