Alien-contact curtain-raiser developed from a comic book series. Millions of years ago the Paxus Majae rescued a number of species from Earth before the Cretaceous/Tertiary extinctions; of these, Avitaurs--descended from pterosaurs, those furry, flying non-dinosaurs of the Mesozoic--have retained their wings while somehow acquiring arms and a humanoid aspect. Avitaur Zeerus, a rebel against the Majae, has fled into space in search of allies against his former masters. But when he arrives in our solar system, he naturally tells his new Earth friends nothing of all this. Zeerus's first contacts are with computer whiz Stewart Davies and his girlfriend Jess Rossini, though soon General Larry Hightower of the Joint Chiefs steps in to manage communications and keep a lid on things; the general's secret lover is the President's Chief of Staff, Laurie Sherman. A subplot involves 11-year-old hacker Jake Holcroft and his fanatical survivalist father's backwoods militia. More like space-politician-contact than alien-contact: creaky and forgettable, all puff and no substance. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. From Booklist:
This is a disparate committee's effort: the late Isaac Asimov inspired actor Leonard Nimoy to conceive ideas that were first adapted by comics producer Tekno-Comix as Leonard Nimoy's Primortals and are now novelized by Perry. The result is a quite thoroughly readable book, anyway. The plot: just before the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs strikes, a number of Earth animals are snatched by the alien Primaster. Later, a sapient descendant of pterodactyls, Zeerus, rebels against the Primaster. Zeerus wants to return to Earth, arm its population, and lead a revolt against Primaster. Needless to say, when Zeerus' ship's signals are detected, things get lively on Earth. Perry's gift for action makes the scenes on Earth much stronger than the scenes with Zeerus, and a number of engaging supporting characters, such as General Lawrence Hightower and 11-year-old hacker Jake Holcroft, represent some of his best writing. The ending obviously demands at least one sequel, which is reported to be in progress. Roland Green
