Grade 1-4 Beautifully designed, this alphabet book offers a game to play without being a toy. Each upper- and lower-case letter is paired with a small boxed drawing of an animal. Children are asked to find an identical drawing of that animal among the multitude of other drawings of animals on each two-page spread. Dozens of colorful birds stand along five telephone wires for B; innumerable black-and-white camels can be found within the outlines of three large camels on the op-art C pages. Identification of the correct animal is not always easy, but the challenge will delight children who enjoy puzzles. The sound/letter association is usually solid, with the exception of N , sloppily represented by a nine-banded armadillo. Answers are provided, with a serendipitous unsolved mystery: to find a cat, located somewhere in the book. A festive alphabet book that allows youngsters to have a good time while they fine-tune their skills of discrimination and observation. David Gale, "School Library Journal"

Dazzling color pictures and striking drawings in mellow gray and white are the attractions in Demi's inventive alphabet-game book. Instructions on how to play precede pages where the upper- and lower-case letters are boxed with a closeup of an animal, bird or fish. The object is to match this image with its duplicate among a myriad of other creatures. Sometimes the hider is incorporated into a bigger portrait of itself on which appear dozens slightly different from the original. Demi delivers the answers at the end of the book, where readers find another challenge that sends them back all the way again through alligators, birds, camels, etc., searching for cat, the most elusive character in the fool-the-eye exercise.
