SHE WAS A MOST UNUSUAL MISS, TO BE SURE!
Lovely Lisanne Neville had always found solace in the verdant beauty of Sevrin Woods. But now the woods were about to be destroyed in order to pay off the gambling debts of the Duke of St. Sevrin. Clearly, drastic measures were called for. So Lisanne proposed marriage to the duke. The deal: her fortune for his woods.
The Duke of St. Sevrin put aside his bottle long enough to consider this mad bargain, recognizing he had nothing to offer this sprite of a girl save his crumbling home, hellish reputation, and mountain of bills. He accepted. It was not the beginning of a fairy-tale marriage--but never underestimate the power of love . . . and a little bit of magic!

When Lady Lisanne Neville became Baroness Neville at the age of twelve, the locals already knew there was and talked to the wee folk? She spent her mornings under the tutelage of her governess, and the afternoons roaming the haunted Sevrin Woods. All that changed at the death of her parents. Lord Neville had been a wise man, and although Lisanne's person was now in the care of her Uncle Alfred, her fortune was in the keeping of a London solicitor. That arrangement suited Sir Alfred Findley not at all. He took out his resentment on Lisanne, while pocketing what he could from the household accounts. He submitted bills for new gowns that went to his daughter Esme as Lisanne dressed in castoffs and ran barefoot. Her respite from the abuse and humiliation was Sevrin Woods. Her uncle could neither threaten nor beat the love of the forest from her. So when the forest was about to be sold, Lisanne concocts a desperate scheme to save it. Sloane Shearingham, fifth Duke of St. Sevrin, had inherited a mountain of bills, a crumbling manor house, and acres of prime forest. Gambling hadn't eased his circumstances; perhaps the sale of the trees would. He returns home to negotiate with the lumbermen. What he doesn't expect is a young woman to climb through the window of the parlor late at night and offer to marry him, settle his debts and provide an heir, all for the price of the deed to Sevrin Woods. He agrees, despite the fact the bride-to-be has twigs in her skirt and dirt on her hands! Lisanne's uncle is furious; his attempt to prevent the marriage is only stopped by a hasty midnight wedding and the intervention of a judge. St. Sevrin sends his aunt to assist in returning Lisanne to the social status she had forsaken. Lisanne does her best for his sake, but it may take the intervention of the wee folk to help them overcome their fear of expressing their true feelings for each other! An Enchanted Affair is witty and refined! It wraps around you and doesn't let go even after the last page is turned! Barbara Metzger has the master's touch! An Enchanted Affair will delight her old fans and make many more new ones! There is nothing usual about Lady Lisanne or An Enchanted Affair!Linda Fitzner -- Copyright © 1994-97 Literary Times, Inc. All rights reserved -- From Literary Times
