About the Author:
In addition to many prize-winning and bestselling novels, including We Were the Mulvaneys, Black Water, and Because It Is Bitter and Because It Is My Heart (available in Plume editions), Joyce Carol Oates is the author of a number of works of gothic fiction including Haunted: Tales of the Grotesque (Plume), a 1995 World Fantasy Award nominee; and Zombie (Plume), winner of the 1996 Bram Stoker Award for Best Horror Novel, awarded by the Horror Writers' Association. In 1994, Oates received the Bram Stoker Lifetime Achievement Award in Horror Fiction. She is the editor of American Gothic Tales and her latest novel is Broke Heart Blues (Dutton). She lives in Princeton, New Jersey.

Oates again displays her amazing versatility with these emotionally charged, powerful plays. Contemporary themes jar the audience out of complacency. "Greensleeves" portrays a girl's grief after her friend dies of AIDS. "Ballad of Love Canal" shows the effects of toxic waste on one family. Feminism is the theme in "I Stand Before You Naked," a collage play in which 12 different women expose their souls to the audience. Many of the plays involve the difficulties of relationships. In "Black," a man, his ex-wife, and her new black lover form a strange triangle. Visual and sound effects are strikingly used. In "Tone Clusters," the amplified voice actually becomes a character in the play. "The Eclipse" is dominated by a shadow falling across the stage. Many of the plays are experimental and surreal. All have strong characterizations and are meant to be performed before an audience. A good purchase for libraries with community theater groups.
