Synopsis
The New Everyman Dictionary of Music has long been regarded as one of the finest and most comprehensive one-volume reference works on music. First published in 1947, The Everyman Dictionary of Music has evolved into an authoritative and comprehensive source of information for a broad range of readers. Cummings has insured its continued usefulness with 1500 new and 1000 updated entries, a list of operatic roles and composers, dates of significant compositions, and coverage of many performers. Aside from the questionable analysis of the "Tristan Chord," the only apparent weakness of the work is its lack of bibliographic references, for which the reader may wish to consult a comparable volume, i.e., J.A. Westrup and F.L. Harrison's The New College Encyclopedia of Music (Norton, 1981). Recommended.
