Synopsis
Typee is Melville's first book, partly based on his actual experiences as a "beachcomber" on Nuku Hiva (which Melville spelled as Nukuheva) in the South Pacific Marquesas Islands. It was Melville's most popular work during his lifetime. Typee is one of the first and arguably the most intelligent contemporary account of Western and Polynesian cultural interaction in the nineteenth century Pacific, and provided many later writers (such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Louis Becke and Jack London) with the themes and images that came to symbolise the Pacific experience: cannibalism, cultural absorption, colonialism, exoticism, eroticism, natural plenty and beauty, and a perceived simplicity of native lifestyle, desires and motives

Hardcover. Condition: As New. No Jacket. Jacques Boullaire (illustrator). This hardcover book, published by Folio Society in 1974, is pristine. No wear, No tears, No markings whatsoever! It is enclosed in a cardboard slipcase that is in Very Good condition. One edge at the bottom of the slipcase is separated and there is a stain showing that it was in contact with a liquid along the spine. The pages are clean and bright. The spine is strong and tight. There is no dust jacket with the slipcase instead. The book comes from a smoke free home. I will ship the book with Media Mail through the US Post Office within 2 business days, usually sooner.
