Book Description J M Dent, UK, 1979. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. BESKOW, Elsa (illustrator). First Edition. First J M Dent Edition 1979. No inscriptions. The original price is printed on the back of the yellow decorative boards. Hardcover. The front boards are illustrated with a tiny tot standing on a lillypad. The corners are good for a book of this age - nearly fine. There are two what look like minute pencil dots on the front cover - all else is intact, bright and clean. The back illustrated hardcovers are in vgc indeed except for a 4 inch oval shape light grey line which is faint and does not hugely detract . A child sits in the middle of an orange/yellow flower on the back boards. There is virtually no shelf wear along the edges of the hardcovers. The spine of the book is covered in smart pale blue linen which is totally intact, clean and bright. Black lettering to the spine. The book itself is very good indeed. The opening pages are cream and they are clean and bright with no marks. No foxing to endpapers or first page. No foxing or marks to the cream endpapers at the back of the book. The spine is tight. The delightful title page, which repeats the illustration on the front cover, is totally intact, clean and bright. There is no foxing at all in the entire book. 29 pages of superb, totally charming illustrations by Elsa Beskow. The pages of the book are bright and clean and intact. However, on page 29 "Thumbelina working on a spindle with a field mouse and spiders" at the bottom, there is a very neatly repaired one and a half inch tear . The repair is clean and neat on both sides of the page, and does not extend into the picture on page 29. This is a charming edition of this enchanting story of the very little girl who was destined to marry a mole. Illustrated at the turn of the century by the famous Swedish artist, Elsa Beskow, the pictures have a sweet, nostalgic old-fashioned appeal. This is a very good copy if you do not mind a neat repair on page 29 and a grey mark on the back boards. Light to post. Very collectable and this edition is scarce in the UK.
