This hard-hitting book draws on the first systematic national research on how the need to meet family obligations is affecting working Americans of all social classes and ethnic groups. What happens when kids get sick? When an elderly parent is hospitalized? How do poor families cope with work-family demands? Jody Heymann's research points to a widening gap between working families and the health and development of children. Outdated labor policy and practice must be brought into the twenty-first century, argues Heymann. To do less is to abandon the precepts of equal opportunity on which America is founded.

About the Author:

Jody Heymann, M.D., Ph.D., is a member of the faculty of Harvard University and Director of Policy for the Harvard University Center for Society and Health. She is the author of Equal Partners: A Physician's Call for a New Spirit of Medicine. She lives in Boston, Massachusetts.

From Booklist:

Physician and social scientist Heymann perceived a dearth of information about poor working families' handling of health-care matters. Over the course of seven years, she designed and led a series of studies to amass a store of information on which valid conclusions about the health-care problems of the working poor and their potential solutions might be based. Current debate, she says, "resemble[s] pulp fiction." Politicians falsely assume that the extended family and neighbors can meet a working family's needs and that family, friends, and neighbors can do that without losing work time. Hence, many U.S health and health-related policies are far more meager than those of many European countries. The Family Medical Leave Act has helped a bit, Heymann grants, but government and society should take action to help relieve poor families' burdens and responsibilities in the workplace and society in general. Offering practical suggestions and puncturing widespread myths, Heymann strives to stimulate discussion and action about medical care and school calendars as well as changes in the workplace and home.
