From the Back Cover:

Nosocomial pneumonia  is the second most frequenthospital-acquired infection and the most common acquired infectionin the intensive care unit. It can be caused by several differentpathogens, and determining the most appropriate therapy is furthercomplicated by a number of differential diagnoses – otherdisorders that mimic this disease, which can only be confirmed orexcluded following laboratory tests. It therefore presents theclinician with a variety of challenges, in both diagnosis andmanagement, all of which represent a significant concern for thewelfare of a group of patients whose ability to combat infection isfrequently already compromised.

In this new work, leading international authorities present anupdate on current best practice for the diagnosis, treatment, andprevention of nosocomial pneumonia. The first section of the bookdescribes the environmental factors that lead to infection, and theclinical approaches appropriate to patients at risk. There thenfollows a series of chapters dedicated to each of the principalpathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcusaureus, Acinetobacter baumannii and the specificstrategies by which infections with these organisms may becombated. Finally, the authors address the problems associated withparticular risk groups, including the immuno-compromised, traumapatients, and the presence of concomitant morbidities such as AcuteRespiratory Distress Syndrome.

This volume will be welcomed by pulmonologists, intensivists, and by all clinicians involved in managing pulmonary infectionsacquired in the hospital sett
