Understanding the dopamine transporter can lead to new therapiesfor neurological disorders

This book consolidates current information on the dopaminetransporter (DAT) in relationto medicinal chemistry and synthesis, biology and pathology, and pharmacology. Because of DAT's role indiseases such as Parkinson's, schizophrenia, attention deficithyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Tourette syndrome, and drug abuse(in particular, cocaine addiction), DAT research is an explodingfield. Tremendous advances have been made toward understanding howit impacts a variety of neurological disease states anddisorders.

This reference provides a broad overview of current knowledge thatis detailed enough to furnish a basic understanding of thebiological, chemical, and pharmacological aspects of DAT in onecomprehensive reference. With contributions from eminent scientistswho are experts in their particular areas, DopamineTransporters: Chemistry, Biology, and Pharmacology:

  • Reviews current studies and research in the areas of DATfunction, pathological conditions, cloning, molecular structure, and electrochemical characterization
  • Covers findings in the medicinal chemistry of DAT-inhibitoryligands and substrates, discussing the chemical syntheses andsummarizing the various structure-activity relationships ofimportant classes of dopamine uptake inhibitors and dopaminereleasers
  • Has chapters that focus on technologies for future DAT study, including imaging and in vivo and in vitro methods
This is a hands-on reference for researchers, medicinal chemists, pharmacologists, and biologists working with DAT or relatedproteins and for students in related areas of study.

About the Author:

Mark L. Trudell, PHD, is University Research Professor ofChemistry at the University of New Orleans. He has authored overninety published papers, holds three patents, and has overseen morethan $6 million in research grants.

Sari Izenwasser, PHD, is Professor in the Department ofPsychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of MiamiMiller School of Medicine. She is author of three book chapters andover ninety peer-reviewed articles, and has overseen more than $7million in research grants.

Review:

"Much of what will be accomplished in the coming years will requirean understanding of the issues and tools presented here. No doubt, those focused on other synaptic transporters will be jealous ofthis resource and should demand companion volumes." (TheQuarterly Review of Biology, March 2010)

"The book is well written and the chapters are well illustratedwhere appropriate. It is a valuable addition to the bookshelf ofanyone interested in dopaminergic neurotransmission." (Journalof Medicinal Chemistry, March 2009)
