—Mathematical Reviews

Biological renewable resources, essential to the survival ofmankind, are increasingly overexploited by individuals andcorporations that often sacrifice long-term economic health andsustainability for short-term gains. Mathematical Bioeconomics:The Mathematics of Conservation, Third Edition analyzes theeconomic forces underlying these misuses of renewable resources anddiscusses more effective methods of resource management. Promotinga complete understanding of general principles, the book allowsreaders to discover how rigorous mathematical models thatincorporate both economic and biological factors should replaceintuitive arguments for conservation and sustainability.

This Third Edition continues to combine methodologiesfrom the fields of economics, biology, and mathematics to explainhow analytic models are essential for developing a completeunderstanding of complex resource systems. The book has beenupdated to address the need for incorporating individual economicincentives, the value of diversity, and the overriding importanceof uncertainty in mathematical models. Coverage of game theory, overcapacity, uncertainty, and risk analysis has been added as wella expanded treatment of topics such as:

  • Models of individual harvest behavior and economicincentives
  • Response of individual harvester to various types of harvestingregulations
  • Reasons underlying excess harvesting capacity
  • Externalities in resource harvesting industries
  • Decision analysis in biological resource management

Fundamental concepts of population dynamics and economics areutilized throughout the book while mathematical techniques areincorporated in an accessible manner. Relevant data from currentresearch sheds light on the presented material, and exercisesprovide readers with an opportunity to test comprehension ofdiscussed mathematical methods and techniques.

Continuing to provide a complete and modernized presentation ofthe fundamental principles of the topic, MathematicalBioeconomics, Third Edition is an excellent book for courses onapplied mathematics, resource management, and environmental studiesat the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. It also serves asan insightful reference for resource managers, ecologists, biologists, and other professionals who work to improve themanagement of renewable resources and develop sustainable practicesin the environmental sciences.
