Toward More Sustainable Infrastructure: Project Evaluation for Planners and Engineers provides readers a framework for understanding and evaluating infrastructure projects to improve their performance and sustainability, taking into account not only the financial and economic issues, but also the social and environmental impacts that affect the sustainability of infrastructure.

Based on a course designed developed by the author over ten years at M.I.T., this text demonstrates how to apply the basic methods of engineering economics in evaluating major infrastructure projects and also demonstrates how these same techniques can be useful with many routine business and personal decisions. It introduces students to project management, system performance, concepts of sustainability, methods of engineering economics, and provides numerous case studies, examples, and exercises based upon real world problems.

This text fills a void in the education of many planners and engineering students, namely an understanding of why major infrastructure projects are undertaken, how they are structured and evaluated, and how they are financed. Toward More Sustainable Infrastructure: Project Evaluation for Planners and Engineers prepares readers to evaluate projects based upon an appreciation of the needs of society, the potential for sustainable development, and recognition of the problems that may result from poorly conceived or poorly implemented projects and programs.

From the Author:

This textbook is based upon "Project Evaluation", a subject that I designed and then taught for ten years as one of the required subjects in the civil engineering undergraduate curriculum at M.I.T.   Like the class, this text is structured not only for civil engineering undergraduates, but also for students in other departments, including economics, urban studies and planning, and management as well as the other engineering disciplines.

Intended Audience and Possible Subjects

This is not another textbook on engineering economics attempting to compete directly with those already on the market.  Instead, this text offers a much broader approach to project evaluation, an approach that should prepare students for careers devoted to creating more sustainable infrastructure systems.  Engineers and planners need to be able to communicate with all the people involved in a project, and they must have some feeling for the financial, economic, environmental and social aspects of a project as well as purely technical matters. This textbook therefore should be of interest to multiple audiences:

  • Undergraduates in civil & environmental engineering:  the text could be used for a new class on Sustainable Infrastructure or Project Evaluation or it could be used as an alternative or supplemental text for a traditional class on Engineering Economy or Engineering Practice
  • First-year graduate students taking a class related to Large Projects or Sustainability as part of a program in civil & environmental engineering, urban studies and planning, engineering systems, or management:  these students will not have the time or the need to take a traditional class on engineering economy, and they will appreciate the focus on projects and programs and the more complete treatment of non-financial matters.  They may also appreciate the introduction to project management.
  • Continuing education and independent education:  students and professionals could use the text to obtain a better understanding of project evaluation via independent reading, on-line teaching, or access to MIT's Open Courseware.
  • Professionals involved in project evaluation or infrastructure management:  professionals may find the text a concise reference covering many facets of project evaluation.  Experienced planners and engineers may recommend the text to less experienced members of their staff.
The over-riding goal of this textbook is to provide students with tools and concepts that they can use throughout their careers in understanding the need for projects, the options that are available, and what must be done to help society move toward more sustainable infrastructure systems.  With sustainability becoming more critical, it is essential that students broaden their perspectives and learn how to apply their skills within the context of very complex - and very interesting - projects and programs.

From the Back Cover:

Toward More Sustainable Infrastructure: Project Evaluation for Planners and Engineers provides readers a framework for understanding and evaluating infrastructure projects to improve their performance and sustainability, taking into account not only the financial and economic issues, but also the social and environmental impacts that affect the sustainability of infrastructure.

This book demonstrates how to apply the basic methods of engineering economics in evaluating major infrastructure projects - and also demonstrates how these same techniques can be useful with many routine business and personal decisions.  It introduces readers to project management, system performance, concepts of sustainability, methods of engineering economics, and provides numerous case studies, examples, and exercises based upon real world problems.  This book helps round-out the knowledge-base of many planners and engineering students, by providing an understanding of why major infrastructure projects are undertaken, how they are structured, and how they are financed.

Toward More Sustainable Infrastructure:  Project Evaluation for Planners and Engineers
prepares readers to evaluate projects based upon an appreciataion of the needs of society, the potential for sustainable development, and recognition of the problems that may result from poorly conceived or poorly implemented projects and programs.
