In its broadest sense, spectroscopy can be defined as the study of the interaction of energy with matter. As such, it is a science encompassing many disciplines and many techniques. In the field of high-energy physics, the radiation is sufficiently energetic to seriously perturb, and in some cases, even transform the matter with which it interacts. On the other hand, in the oldest form of spectroscopy, optical spectroscopy, the energy is usually too low to perturb or noticeably alter the material under study.
