From the Back Cover

Effective strategies for promoting literacy across the curriculum

Combining a real grounding in actual classroom experience with a solid research and theoretical base, Martha Rapp Ruddell’s Teaching Content Reading and Writing equips you with classroom-tested theories and practices for teaching reading and writing across the curriculum.

Now revised and updated, this Fourth Edition features increased coverage of sheltered instruction, a greater emphasis on the multi-modal nature of the literacy practices of today's youth and its implications in content classrooms, and more coverage of high-stakes testing and alternative assessment formats.

Inside, you’ll find valuable resources including:

  • Over 30 different instructional strategies for teachers to use to guide students' reading and writing in middle and secondary schools.
  • Guidelines on how to use technology to promote student literacy in content areas.
  • Comprehensive coverage of second language acquisition and development and appropriate instructional practice for teaching bilingual students in multilingual classrooms.
  • Step-by-step lists of how to plan and prepare, and what you need to consider to make specific instructional strategies work.
  • Demonstration lesson plans in many different content areas throughout.
