BLACK BOOKS GALORE!, winner of Parenting magazine's Parenting Leaders Award and NAACP Image Award finalist, was founded by DONNA RAND, TONI TRENT PARKER, and other mothers who, as a result of their challenges in finding quality books for their own children, dedicated themselves to identifying and distributing fine African American children's literature.
From School Library Journal:This sequel to Black Books Galore! Guide to Great African American Children's Books (Wiley, 1998) recommends 450 more titles. The selectors describe themselves as "neither professional educators nor librarians-.every book in this guide is recommended by us as parents." Books were chosen that are age appropriate and that do not stereotype black, female, or male characters. Arrangement is by grade level and then alphabetical by title. Entries include title, subtitle, author, illustrator, publisher of the hardcover and softcover editions, original publication date, and a brief synopsis. Significant awards, sequels, prequels, companions, or series titles are noted. "Creator" boxes spotlight authors and illustrators. Appendixes include: "Books for Parents and Families," Coretta Scott King awards, Newbery and Caldecott books with African-American or African themes, and Reading Rainbow selections with African-American or African themes.
