About the Author:

JANICE VANCLEAVE won the Phi Delta Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award in 1982. She is a well-known presenter at schools, museums, and science fairs, and the author of fourteen other science experiment books.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 7-10-A systematic, well-organized collection of 30 science-fair projects. VanCleave thoroughly explains the principles behind each experiment, provides step-by-step instructions on set up, and offers suggestions for exploring related topics. She introduces the volume by describing problem solving using the scientific method and gives pointers on designing displays. Projects are divided into three broad subject areas-botany, zoology, and the human body-and appendixes instruct readers on basic skills, such as preparing slides and solutions, preserving plants, etc. A summary of the principles and objectives of each experiment, a list of materials needed, and an explanation of results are included. Black-and-white drawings, diagrams, and graphs help to clarify descriptions. These experiments require some basic knowledge of biology, and some need adult supervision. The author has done a commendable job in providing sound advice and encouragement to students interested in scientific mysteries. Salvatore Tocci's Biology Projects for Young Scientists (Watts, 1987) has a comparable discussion of scientific principles, but gives less detailed guidance on setting up experiments.
