Novel Aspects of Insect-Plant Interactions Edited by Pedro Barbosa and Deborah Letourneau This volume represents the forefront of two rapidly advancing areas of ecology: three-trophic-level interactions and the interdisciplinary field of chemical ecology The book focuses on the role of microorganisms as mediators of interactions between insects and plants, providing critical appraisal of studies and suggesting ways to integrate competing hypotheses of insect-plant dynamics. 1988 (0 471-83276-6) 362 pp. Arthropod Biological Control Agents and Pesticides Brian A. Croft Examining the effects of pesticides on predators and parasites and exploring methods for reducing negative impacts of pesticide use, this book focuses on the interaction of pesticides with entomophagous arthropods. It surveys the history of research in the field and discusses susceptibility assessment, lethal, sublethal, and ecological effects of pesticides, and selectivity, resistance, and resistance management. 1990 (0 471-81975-1) 723 pp. Lepidopteran Anatomy, John Eaton This single-source treatment on the anatomy of Lepidoptera provides a detailed exposition of its anatomy plus all its life stages, including the larva and adult forms of the exoskeleton, musculature, organ systems, and specialized structures. As the only thorough examination of the morphology of this insect group, it is an essential acquisition for entomologists, morphologists, and insect physiologists. 1988 (1-05862-9) 257 pp. Integrated Pest Management Systems and Cotton Production Edited by Ray Frisbie, Kamal El-Zik, and L. Ted Wilson The most complete and authoritative work available on the subject, this book brings together information on integrated pest management strategies that are applicable to cotton. It addresses economic, agronomic, and biological factors of pest management and focuses on plant resistance to pests and the genetic rationale for improving plant health. 1989 (0 471-81782-1) 437 pp.

From the Publisher:

This volume presents diverse biological aspects of grasshoppers, a group of insects that includes locusts and that is of major importance in research and pest control. Advances made possible by new methods and technological development are emphasized such as electron microscopy, radar studies of insect movements, modern methods in population biology, as are developments in ecophysiology. Coverage includes chemoreception, food selection, water and temperature regulation, chemical communication, pathogenic diseases and color pattern polymorphism.

From the Inside Flap:

The often mythic status accorded migratory locust plagues and the severe economic impact of which they, along with grasshoppers, are capable have been a chief motive behind research into those insects. But acridoids are also ideal organisms for studying problems of basic biology, not to mention their significance in a number of other areas of research. That they are interesting subjects of research is one of the premises at work in this book. The other is that a multidimensional view of acridoids is necessary to appreciate fully their observable biological responses. Reflecting the considerable refinement in research techniques that has occurred since Uvarov’s classic on physiology and behavior of Acridoidea, this book offers new information in the field made possible by the advent of radar and electron microscopy, recent developments in electrophysiology, and new paradigms, especially in approaches to population biology. Biology of Grasshoppers comprises articles authored by a number of specialists in a variety of related disciplines. Among the topics covered are:

  • Chemoreception, food selection, feeding, nutrition
  • Water and temperature regulation
  • Pheromones, chemical communication, mating systems
  • Flight and migration, population dynamics
  • Pathogenic diseases and color pattern polymorphism
With studies ranging from the molecular to the evolutionary scales, Biology of Grasshoppers presents a diversity of topics in a context that emphasizes the functioning of the whole organism. Providing many insights into general biological principles through the study of Acridoidea, its organismal approach juxtaposes chapters from scientists with very different backgrounds to provide links among disciplines that are too often ignored.
