During the production and storage of crude petroleum and its products there are many stages at which a small but real risk of oil entering the sea - whether by equipment failure or human error. In "Marine Pollution by Oil", published in 1974, the Institute of Petroleum produced a technical guide to the analysis of such samples. However there have been significant changes since, in production patterns, legislative requirements and analytical techniques - all of which make this updated version exceedingly timely. The editors have also taken the opportunity to broaden the appeal of the material included and address a wider audience. In addition to expounding particular analytical methods, the text advises company management on the effective use of analysis for identification, correction of the sources of the pollution, and defence if mistakenly accused. Legislators and enforcers need to understand what analysis can and cannot do - and the book explains how they can be helped in their duties.
