The Institute of Petroleum Model Code of Safe Practice has for many years made a significant contribution to oil industry operations and their record of safety. This revised edition of Part 4 of the Code on Onshore Drilling and Production Operations, supersedes the earlier third edition "Drilling and Production" published in 1965. A complementary code covering offshore operations (Part 8 of the IP Code of Safe Practice) entitled "Drilling and Production in Marine Areas" (2nd Edition) was published in 1972, and compliance with both IP Codes is a condition of the granting by the Secretary of State for Energy of a licence to carry out such operations. This code sets out the general requirements for the safe drilling, well testing and completion, and production of onshore oil and gas. The technical recommendations have been brought up- to-date and recent legislation has been referred to where appropriate. Its contents have also been the subject of review with the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The Code is based on accepted good practice and the appropriate standards in use in the industry. It should be regarded as being complementary to the statutory requirements pertaining to the petroleum industry in many countries. It is hoped that the adoption of this Code will help to reduce the risk of accidents.
