In this deeply stirring account, Jean Trounstine, who spent 10 years teaching at Framingham (MA) Women's Prison, focuses on six inmates who, each in her own way, discover in the power of Shakespeare a way to transcend the painful constraints of incarceration. Shakespeare Behind Bars is a powerful story about the redemptive power of art and education.
Originally published in cloth in 2001, the paperback includes a new foreword that will inspire all teachers who work with students others have deemed unteachable. A new afterword updates readers on the prison art's program -- and the author herself -- since 2001.

From the Publisher:

The book reveals the redemptive power of art and education and is an inspiration to all those who work with students others have deemed unteachable.

About the Author:

A professor at Middlesex Community College in Massachusetts, Trounstine taught at Framingham Women's Prison for ten years where she directed eight plays with inmates, received awards for her work, and met the six women who form the nucleus of this book. SHAKESPEARE BEHIND BARS was first published in cloth with St. Martin's Press (2001) and was featured on NPR. She also coedited an anthology, CHANGING LIVES THROUGH LITERATURE, for Notre Dame Press (1999) based on an internationally acclaimed reading program in the criminal justice system. Essays and poetry have appeared in "The Boston Globe Magazine", "Southwest Review", "Working Woman Magazine" and "Sojourner" and she speaks around the country about this work. A book of poetry about the journey of cancer, ALMOST HOME FREE, was published by Pecan Grove Press in 2003, and another text about Changing Lives theory and practice is in the works with the U. of Michigan Press.
