Jason Cianciotto, MPA, and Sean Cahill, Ph.D., experts on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender public policy advocacy, combine an accessible review of social science research with analyses of school practices and local, state, and federal laws that affect LGBT students. In addition, portraits of LGBT youth and their experiences with discrimination at school bring human faces to the issues the authors discuss.
This is an essential guide for parents, teachers, school administrators, guidance counselors, and social workers interacting with students on a daily basis; school board members and officials determining school policy; nonprofit advocates and providers of social services to youth; and academic scholars, graduate students, and researchers training the next generation of school administrators and informing future policy and practice.

About the Author:

Jason Cianciotto, MPA, has been advocating for the health, safety, and well-being of LGBT people for over a decade. He has served at the national level as research director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute and at the state level as executive director of Wingspan, Southern Arizona's LGBT community center. He is the author of Hispanic and Latino Same-Sex Couple Households in the United States: A report from the 2000 Census and co-author, with Sean Cahill, of Youth in the Crosshairs: The Third Wave of Ex-Gay Activism. As a consultant specializing in policy analysis and government affairs, Jason has worked in collaboration with nonprofits and private foundations to support the appointments of experts on LGBT issues to federal advisory boards and to secure bilateral funding for international LGBT human rights work. Sean Cahill, Ph.D., is Director of Health Policy Research at the Fenway Institute and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Public Administration at NYU's Robert Wagner School of Public Service. He is the author of two books on marriage and LGBT family policy and many peer-reviewed articles and chapters. He is author of Pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention: Moving toward implementation, published by the Fenway Institute in February 2012. At Fenway Cahill focuses on LGBT health and HIV policy. Cahill was Managing Director of Public Policy, Research and Community Health at Gay Men's Health Crisis from 2007 to 2011. He directed the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute from 2001 to 2007. As an activist Cahill advocated for the Massachusetts gay student rights law in 1993, and served as Chair of the Lesbian and Gay Political Alliance of Massachusetts in the mid-1990s.

Review:

"...should jolt the conscience and imagination of every educational policymaker, school leader, teacher-educator, and teacher in the nation. It clearly outlines the risks faced by sexual minority students...and provides a compelling road map for both reform and further study." -- Arthur Lipkin, Massachusetts Commission on GLBT Youth

"This study is the first systematic, research-based review that brings together a huge literature on the status of LGBT youth in U.S. schools. This contribution marks a milestone in the literature and represents an enormous amount of research, methodology, and policy review." -- Gilbert Herdt, San Francisco State University
