Ann Bayley was born on January 31, 1928, in Appleton, Wisconsin, USA, to Edwin Hobart and Wilhelmina [nee Telinde] Bayley. In 1949 during her junior year at university she met a New Zealand scientist on a between semesters ski trip. He soon asked her to leave with him in the June of that year, when he was to return to his homeland. She refused to abandon her course, but promised to follow him there when she had completed her degree in a year's time. From 1952 she was completely employed in childcare and housework until the late 1960's, by which time four children had been well launched in their own lives. She then returned to university, in New Zealand, for an M.A. in German, followed by a course at Teachers' Training College, then teaching of English, German and Music. From 1977 until 1983, she helped care for grandchildren while completing an M.A. in Russian. In the early 1990's she taught English as a second language in Auckland, and began research for the present volume, in which her interests in history, languages, society and family are all represented."--Publisher description.
