Excerpt from The Six Sisters of the Valleys, Vol. 1 of 3: An Historical Romance
The following romance adheres, for the most part rigidly to history, and presents a general sketch of the period in which the scene is laid. Almost every incident is based upon authentic facts, and the allusions in the conversations are more or less his torical, and can be verified by references. If any details appear horrible, let truth be their apology. Yet let the reader remember that the half is not told. Nothing could exceed the cruelties and horrors that were actual perpetrated by the Roman Catholics against the Waldenses the imagination can hardly conceive them, morality forbids us to blacken our pages with their exhumation, and they would be difficult to credit, were it not for the well-known evil of human nature, especially when excited by religious hatred and persecuting intolerance.
