According to legend, Howard Garis (1873 1962) invented Uncle Wiggily while he was watching a frisky pair of rabbits at play in the wild. A longtime reporter for New Jersey's The Newark News, Garis began writing about the old gentleman rabbit for the newspaper in 1910. His Uncle Wiggily stories appeared in the News nearly every day for four decades, until his retirement in 1947.
National syndication brought these popular stories to papers across the United States, and millions of eager readers purchased the Uncle Wiggily books. Garis wrote scores of other books for children, often under several different pen names, including many volumes of the Tom Swift and Bobbsey Twins series.
